Design Competition

Design Aotearoa 2010 - a design competition created by Evolve New Zealand

Design Aotearoa is an exciting competition to find designs for Evolve New Zealand's unique range of New Zealand inspired jewellery.  In 2011 Evolve New Zealand will again invite New Zealand's budding designers and artists to send us designs for silver or gold charms that reflect New Zealand's landscape, lifestye and culture.  Watch this space for updates - Design  Aotearoa 2011 will be launched at the start of 2011.

If you are an artist or designer then Design Aotearoa is a fantastic opportunity to extend your skills, to work on a real business case study, or to build your art or design portfolio.  While only one person may get to see their name associated with a manufactured end-product, there are cash prizes also up for grabs if your design is chosen to be manufactured for sale.

Get inspired.  If you are interested in being on our 'updates' list please email designs@evolvenz.co.nz with your details.

Design Aotearoa 2010, First place - Alex Chai, 'Cityscape'

Alex migrated to New Zealand over 20 years ago and has grown up in New Zealand.  Alex has always been creative and had a passion for art and design. Today, design is Alex's career. Alex is a freelance designer and part of SEND Design, which is a group of young emerging designers working on a variety of projects ranging from Product, Graphics and Furniture design. As a migrant, Alex always had family members visiting and holidaying in New Zealand. The experiences and the memories of their trips to New Zealand are the inspirations for his designs. Alex's winning ‘Cityscape’ design represents Auckland City. The high rise structures of the city combined with the green hills and clear blue water creates a magnificent landscape which has a long lasting impression on our visitors. The focal point of the design is the sky tower which has become an icon for New Zealand and a highlight for tourists. The design captures the silhouette of the city and is translated into a piece of jewellery.

Design Aotearoa 2010, Second place - Simone Keller-Elliott, 'design number 8 wire'

Simone was born in Switzerland but grew up in New Zealand.  She completed a Bachelor of Design at Unitec in Auckland and has recently completed a Goldsmithing apprenticeship in Switzerland.  Upon returning to New Zealand Simone was "struck" by the 'can-do' attitude and readiness of kiwis to give things a go.  This is what has inspired Simone's 'number 8 wire' charm which saw Simone placed second in the 2010 competition.  For Simone, her 'number 8 wire' design symbolises kiwi ingenuity and a 'hands-on' approach; an attitude that Simone found refreshing on her return home to New Zealand.
